After the release of 2021’s Run Hide Fight, it was made very clear the The Daily Wire was not just talk when it came to releasing its own fictional movies. Now that the company has released its first original movie, it’s also clear that the conservative news and commentary outlet is dead serious on adding its own movie production wing.
The Daily Wire comes out a swinging with its first original film, Shut In, in that this thriller is nowhere near your typical independent film. The dialogue, the acting, the storyline, the cinematography — everything comes off as if one of the big Hollywood studios produced it.
Shut In is about an ex-addict, single mother of two named Jessica who is locked in her pantry by her drug addict ex-boyfriend, Rob and his friend, Sammy. That simplifies the plot of this thriller quite a bit, but keep in mind that Jessica is left in agony because she is locked away from her two very young children who are left defenseless against the meth-crazed Rob and Sammy.
And while this sounds incredibly dark (it is), the film unabashedly alludes to Christianity quite a bit, but not with an overt agenda. Not to spoil too much, but a couple of nails puncture a couple of hands and it’s almost as if a crucifix sort of watches over and guides Jessica as she tries to escape. Once she does do so, the way she escapes gives the impression that she is being born again — baptized almost.
The acting is pretty amazing in this film. Rainey Qualley, who plays Jessica is great as the lead. Her ability to portray a mother’s agony is stellar and the way she is able to express her character’s temptation towards hard drugs is as well. In my opinion though, the actor that truly steals the show is Vincent Gallo, who plays Sammy. Gallo’s ability to act as a meth-fueled creep (to put it very lightly) was remarkable. He really makes the viewer hate Sammy as well as leaving the viewer unsure as to how or the character will behave in the following scene. Sammy is quite the “wild card” to say the least.
I was pleasantly surprised by Shut In for a couple of reasons. The first being that I thought for sure this would be scarier than it was advertised to be. If you can get through a Tarantino movie, you should be fine. The second being that I’m not much of a thriller movie fan generally, but Shut In kept me on the edge of my seat a lot. The film gets the viewer very invested in all of the characters and the storyline.
The only part that stuck out negatively to me was at the end when the film fades to sometime in the near future where Jessica and her children are just fine after the climax of the story. After an ordeal like this, you’d think you would see some cops, but some artistic license is fine. I’ll give that a pass.
With Shut In as The Daily Wire’s first original film, the outlet is definitely on a role as a production company. Run Hide Fight was a great action movie that I bet Hollywood wouldn’t have touched unless it had an overt anti-gun agenda. And there is no way Hollywood would allow Shut In to be released the way that The Daily Wire has with its Christian themes. Overall, if you have a Daily Wire subscription, Shut In is definitely worth your time if you’re looking to watch a movie that is very much a breath of fresh air to thriller genre.
