Dinesh D'Souza is no stranger to going out and creating films that the mainstream finds to be inflammatory and objectionable for all of the right reasons, but his latest film, 2000 Mules is probably the one that his critics will find most controversial.
Many on the right these days find it easy to believe that the 2020 election was stolen. The notion that a near-brain dead Joe Biden received 81 million votes when he barely campaigned is something that is quite hard to believe. While his time in the White House was not perfect due some questionable hires and the Deep State fighting him at every turn, Trump had a booming economy, he signed the Abraham Accords, he was bringing the troops home, he was nominating incredibly effective judges (as we now see, especially), he was exposing China and globalism, he was getting Republicans to finally go on offense, he was successfully fighting the culture war, he inched us closer to ending the Korean War… I could go on. There seemed to be a shift in the people who didn’t vote for him in 2016 that had planned to vote for him in 2020. In 2020, it really did feel like Trump was on his way to easily getting his second term.
So what happened?
There have been theories and pieces of evidence — circumstantial, anecdotal, etc. passed around online and on cable television, but there was no real concrete proof to show that the 2020 election was stolen and consequently that has divided the MAGA movement even before it was even certified.
But amazingly, Dinesh D'Souza’s 2000 Mules does just show proof.
D'Souza sets the documentary up primarily as an ongoing conversation amongst his fellow Salem Media radio hosts, Charlie Kirk, Larry Elder, Sebastian Gorka, Dennis Prager, and Eric Metaxas on their opinions about what happened to the 2020 presidential election. All of them have different variances of the opinion that something fishy happened, but certainly none of them fully believe that it was “the most secure election in United States history.” Out of all of them, Prager is the one that is the most skeptical that it was fixed, labeling himself “agnostic” on the matter.
D'Souza and his wife Deborah decide to consult the team at True The Vote and see what they have to say about the 2020 election and that is where the real whirlwind of the film begins. The amount of sheer data that True The Vote has on the election is absolutely astounding — both video and geo-tracking.
During the conversation between the D'Souzas and True The Vote they succinctly lay out how they believe that the election was stolen so that the average American can understand what is being shown to them through out the film. That is the core of why 2000 Mules is such a good documentary. It’s very easy to follow and comprehend.
Towards the end of the film, Dennis Prager, who again, is the most skeptical one out of all the Salem hosts, has had his mind totally changed based on the evidence that the film provides. He’s actually quite irate at the end.
The only real problems that I saw with the film are on the style side of things. There are what seem to be some somewhat scripted (in the reality show sense) scenes that come off as try-hard and kind of corny. They keep the story going, but they aren’t executed that well. And also, because there are so many components to the film’s theory, the proposed solutions aren’t very clear.
For many, 2000 Mules will be the confirmation of what they have suspected of what happened during the 2020 election. For many others, they’ll just ignore the film entirely or call it right wing propaganda and red meat for the MAGA base. To paraphrase Charlie Kirk’s line in the documentary, this film could move the Overton window enough to effect some real change. It’s a well produced and well edited film that has a compelling premise. And it’s really a bipartisan film that should appeal to anyone that has concerns about election integrity generally.
I’m sure that the corporate “fact checkers” will be all over this one.
