Two important things happened in 2019. The Mueller investigation finally concluded and Lee Smith released his book about the entire Russiagate scandal titled, The Plot Against The President. Soon after, director and former State Department Deputy Assistant Secretary For Content under the Trump administration, Amanda Milius optioned Lee’s book to create a documentary under the same title.
There is no doubt that the Russiagate scandal that plagued the Trump administration was one of the greatest hoaxes perpetrated on the American public. It was probably the closest we ever got a soft coup d’etat. I’m not going to claim to be some political expert, but I think I followed the story and the subsequent and tedious Mueller investigation that (OF COURSE) led to just about nothing, pretty closely for someone who doesn’t get paid to do so. And yet, I still found it all so confusing because of the agitprop, red herrings, and straight up lies told to us by the usual suspects in the corporate press (looking at you, Brian “Soybean” Stelter of CNN). It was really easy to get lost if you didn’t examine every story with a microscope or you didn’t have connections in Washington, DC. I knew the basic story, I knew some of the major players involved, but I wasn’t able to tell you for example, how Bruce Ohr or Kash Patel were involved respectively.
What makes The Plot Against The President the quintessential film about Russiagate is that the filmmakers got access to just about all of the important characters that were involved or witnessed what was going on a first and/or second-hand basis. They were able to talk to Rep. Devin Nunes and give him a chance to really tell what he not only discovered in an unfiltered way, but also to counter the enemy class media’s smears about him. They also interview Tom Fitton, Corey Lewandowski, Kash Patel, Rep. Matt Gaetz, former New York Mayor Rudy Guiliani, Rep. Jim Jordan, Donald Trump Jr., Richard Grenell, Dr. Sebastian Gorka, K.T. McFarland and so many more. And arguably just as importantly, real journalists like Jack Posobiec, Mike Cernovich, and Raheem Kassam who reported honestly about Russiagate in real time were interviewed as well. So you get a very in depth look at what actually happened from a ton of different view points.
One of the more confusing parts about the Russiagate scandal was just how many “sub-scandals” it created. For instance, The Plot Against The President clearly and succinctly explains the connections between how General Flynn got railroaded by the FBI, how Roger Stone got embattled with faulty (if that) criminal charges, how the Trump campaign was actually spied on and how it got falsely accused of working with the Russians, and so much more.
The Plot Against The President is a very well shot documentary. Just like Hoaxed, the filmmakers went all out creatively. The use of dark backgrounds and gloomy visual effects especially really gives the viewer the feeling of just how bad things got in Washington, DC during this period. The White House and FBI Headquarters, typically bold and inspiring American monuments, are shot with dimming effects that give them a much more sinister vibe. The film is also really good with using visuals and diagrams to break down connections between the people and (formerly trusted) institutions involved in the scandal. One of the biggest takeaways of the movie is a diagram that shows just how the corporate press, deep state, and politicians operate together to form narratives in their favor and deliver it to the masses. I would argue that it is the most important scene of the film because it prepares the viewer for handling what the corporate press shoves down his/her throat for future events.
The Plot Against The President is for anyone who is interested in learning about what really happened during Russiagate. It is a fantastic introduction to the subject and for those of us that followed the scandal, it fills in the holes with details that we probably would not have gotten anywhere else. This film is one of the more significant historical documents of the 21st century.
